Melanoma is a malignant tumor of the skin and mucous membranes, that is formed from pigment cells. The main risk factors for its occurrence are: natural and artificial ultraviolet radiation, light skin phototype, genetic factors and occurrence in the family. The basic diagnostic method is dermatoscopy, and the diagnosis can be made based on histopathological examination of the lesion. The basic method of melanoma treatment is surgical excision of the primary tumor. The aim of the study was to assess the state of knowledge about melanoma and its prevention among students of non-medical universities in Krakow, aged 19 to 30, using an anonymous questionnaire. A small percentage of the respondents know the correct definition of melanoma, but majority correctly responds to the question about the location and risk factors of melanoma. Students are aware of the fact that sunscreen should be used while sunbathing and that the skin of children should be protected more intensively against sunburn. Early detection often allows for a complete cure, so it is important that the knowledge about the causes of this cancer and its prevention is constantly deepened.
